Chili - Ben Lorenz

I was visiting my friends Ben and Nichole one day when Ben was making chili. It smelled wonderful, so I had some, and it was delicious. It was everything chili should be: thick, hearty, comforting, and a little spicy. I loved it, and the next time I made chili, I asked for the recipe. Here it is, untweaked. (That's a huge compliment, because I tweak everything!)

Prep Time: 20-25 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Oven Temp: 450°F
Serves: 6-10

Ingredients:
  • 3/4 - 1 lb. ground turkey
  • 1 tube regular pork sausage (if you like spicy, use spicy pork sausage)
  • 1 large white onion, diced
  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large can tomatoes, diced
  • 1 large can tomato sauce
  • 2-3 cans kidney beans, drained
  • 1-2 packets chili flavoring
Directions:

Preheat oven to 450°F. Drain tomatoes and set the juice aside. Place tomatoes and whole garlic cloves on a flat pan and roast in oven approx. 15 minutes.

In large saucepan, saute onions in olive oil over medium-high heat until soft (not brown). Add ground turkey and sausage until fully cooked.

Crush the roasted garlic into the saucepan and add roasted tomatoes, the drained kidney beans, the tomato juice you set aside, the tomato sauce and the chili flavoring. Bring to boil and allow to simmer for 30 minutes to allow flavors to combine.

To serve, add cheddar cheese and/or sour cream.
